Hi again! So I do have a question: do people generally post content they make to their own journals or to communities? Are communities just for discussion posts/announcements and the like?
It depends! Historically, people would post things like fic on their personal journals and put a separate post linking to it up at communities. These days, people will tend to put it up on AO3 and announce it on the comm, and often at their journals as well. People also may post meta or discussion posts to comms. Here's a good example of a relatively active comm: anime_manga. A lot of it's links to fic, so that people can find and read them (this is also a good way to find people with similar interests to you to follow directly). There's also a couple of icon posts (that link back to the creator's journal) and a post at the top to invite discussion (The Weekly Round Up, which has 44 comments already). If you click in to the Round Up post, you can see the way the comments are laid out and reply to ones that interest you. Unless a community's rules specifically prohibit sharing your own work, feel free to go for it!
There are also sometimes fandom-specific posts that encourage anonymous prompts and story fills in the comments (kinkmemes!) If you are okay with NSFW content, check out the dbh_kinkmeme journal, particularly the prompt post.
